Description

This was a submission for a street art painting for my university's anime club, UGAnime, as part of our promotion of our week-long showing of anime dubbed the Mega Day of Anime (MDOA). First, the club decided on the theme for the current semester which was "Woah, Woah, Fight the Powah!". The theme is a reference to the anime Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (which I suggest for anyone to watch) while the "Woah" comes from our club lore.

Anyway, after the theme was decided, submissions for street art had to be turned soon. My initial idea was to have our club mascot, a pink-haired devil girl we call Oni-chan, hold up a fist in the air a la the Black Power movement (if you are not aware of the movement, I suggest that you read a book). This idea was quickly shot down when it was agreed upon that images that might be deemed controversial by the university should not be used.

So what then? As I was leaving one of our club meetings, it came to me to use the Rosie the Riveter WWII poster "We Can Do It!" as inspiration. I found the image on the internet easily and then proceeded to take it over into Corel Painter X and began to trace over it with a Wacom Bamboo tablet I had bought the other week.

I kept the number of colors small since the intent was for this to be used as a street art painting and when it comes to street painting, you need to keep your color palette as limited as the amount of money and time you and your club can afford for it. When it came time for the club to vote on the submissions, submissions from our club's more talented artists received more votes than mine did understandably.

Though my entry did not win for the street art painting, I aim to go back over this later, correct any and all mistakes I made and submit it as a club T-shirt design at a later date. Anyone is certainly welcome in pointing out mistakes so I can keep them in mind the next time I decide to pick up my tablet pen.

Great tracing, though she seems quite flat (due to the lack of shading, but) And I've added you to my friends list at Deviant Art. I really like the eyes and the eyebrows and hair. They look like sketches for a pre-animation insert into a professional anime (if that made any sense whatsoever)! Nice going, Joe! :)
